My Dreams

  My Dreams
Illusory moments connecting
Fantasy to reality,
Lucidity to insanity,
Hope to a desolate soul

My Dreams
Like the essence of life
belong to me
exclusively, independently
and so
 they  are rare, precious
 Treasures to be kept
safe
nurtured
cherished

My Dreams
filled with a blissful revelation
 or heartbreak and regret
All are valuable
Their content
must never to lost
or abandoned
but preserved from within
For without them
I will surely lose who I am
 and fade into non-existence
for eternity

                          Dear crystal white snow
              Your beauty long has vanished
               Please make room for spring

If You Were in My Shoes.....

Turning on our porch light to admire our long day of yard work, we couldn't help but appreciate the subtle bursts of lightening forming on the horizon. The gentle drizzle of rain combined with the aroma of a bonfire’s dying embers summed up the ideal fragrance of a perfect summer night.

In the best of spirits, I reached for a chilled bottle of wine……

“To accomplishment!” we toasted, preparing to clink our glasses….

BZZZZ!! FLICKER!! POP!!

Darkness.

“#&@#!! !” I muttered under my breath…..

“What the heck?” My daughter moaned, “it’s not even storming…..I hate this…” her words trailed off as she headed toward the kitchen to retrieve a flashlight.

The blackness tried to taunt us, but it had lost its power.  We’d learned, over time to maneuver quite adeptly in the darkness, and were always prepared with flashlights and candles. In less than a moment, our shadows flickered and danced mockingly on the walls!!  I smiled.

“Improvise, Adapt and Overcome!”  I pictured my husband boldly pronouncing these words. Yes, I know they belong to Clint Eastwood……but John had somehow made them his own.
“You’d be proud of us.” I said out loud….but my triumphant words were cut short.
Out of the silence it came……a heart piercing, blood curdling, indescribable screech that can only be defined as a scream!!  In a matter of seconds, adrenaline had taken over my body and brain completely….there was no time to think.
“What are you doing, Ma?” My daughter screamed as I rushed out the door.
“Call 911!” I yelled back, dashing toward the house across the street. The baby…..all I could think of was the baby.
Sucking in a deep breath, I swallowed hard, and then let it go as I made my way to the door. We had waved back and forth several times, but had never actually spoken.  What if she doesn't speak English? I wondered. How will I communicate?…..What will I do if she needs help with the baby?
As I reached the porch I could see inner door was wide open.  My ears perked up….Did I hear something? In my peripheral vision I caught it, a flash, a flicker….a cigarette perhaps? I didn't know……but for the first time I was frightened.
Gripping the door knob, my voice called tentatively into the unknown. “Hello…..uh....hola….I, are you okay… do you need help…ayuda?”
The reply of utter silence gripped my soul with a fear more aggressive than the scream itself.
Letting go of the door knob, I had a decision to make.
If you were in my situation, what would you do?

Which are you?

Recently, researchers debunked the theory of left brain/right brain dominance, referring to it now as just a myth!!

I say.....

"Are you kidding me???"

For years I've found comfort in knowing my traits could be scientifically defined by the dominant hemisphere in my brain!!

It was simple! It provided balance.

Everyone knew that people of the right brain persuasion tended to be a little more whimsical, disorganized, or emotional, but we also knew that, what we lacked in logic or predictability, was compensated for by our creativity, and intuition.

Even better, we could scientifically  justify our phobia of higher level math ….I mean it was a known fact that mathematical skills were attributed to the left brain thinkers. but as right brainers we had the ability to whip out a picture or poem in the blink of an eye.

Each day, in the school setting, I witness clear examples of (what I still view as) left brain/right brain dominance. ( Unique, innate skills or talents that cannot be learned.). Unique skills that provide each child with a sense of competency.  Each day

How I envy those who function so effortlessly in areas that wreak havoc in my life. (e.g. organization. The books, containers, labels, and advice do nothing for a person who cannot make her brain cooperate.) That would be me!

That being said, I'm not ready to give up on the theory of left/right brain dominance....fact or myth, it's still working for me!

Please click on the links below to test your own brain dominance...just for the fun of it:-)

SD143 Mystery Writer

As a new writer, the only thing that is more exciting than composing  a piece is the act of introducing a talented budding writer to our wonderful writing community. Today, I am super excited and inredibly honored have the opportunity to do just that.
The piece below was not written by me, but by someone we all know and love. While I'm not at liberty reveal the identity of the author of The Encounter, I am  relatively confident you will all find out shortly. In the mean time, please enjoy this delightful piece, and leave feedback if you feel compelled to do so........
We look forward to hearing from you:-)

The Encounter
They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but that’s just not true. Men…men are from some distant, unknown, far off, never-before-conceived-of place that we can’t even begin to imagine. I’ve always known this, but a conversation with my husband the other day really drove the point home.
He shouts from the other room:
“Hey Babe, you seen my insurance card?”
“No…I’ve seen MY insurance card”
“Oh.”
“Well, do you want to use mine? It has your info on it.”
“Sure. Where’s it at?”
“In my purse.”
“Okay.”
“Why do you need your insurance card?”
“I have to see my doctor.”
“About what?”
“My finger.”
“What about your finger?”
“It’s swollen and bruised.”
“How bad?”
“Not too bad. See.”
He comes into the room and nonchalantly waves a mangled finger in front of my face.
“Oh my goodness! Look at it! Is it broken? Can you move it?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Not so much.”
“What do you mean not so much? Can you move it or not?”
“Probably not.”
He attempts to move his finger and grimaces. He never grimaces.
“Oh my God! You’re probably right! Don’t move it. Just try to keep it still. What happened?”
“I hurt it.”
“I see that! How?!”
“I fell on it last night.”
“Did you trip over something?”
“No.”
“Well, how did you fall?”
“I lost my balance when I swung at the goose.”
“The goose? You swung at a goose?! What were you doing swinging at a goose?!”
“It startled me.”
“How did a goose startle you? What goose? Where were you?
“At work. I was walking alongside one of the buildings at work last night and I didn’t see it.”
“How could you not see a goose? Have you seen the wingspan on those things?
“I did last night. That’s why it startled me.”
“So tell me what happened.”
“I already told you.”
I sigh quietly.
“Okay, just tell me one more time. What exactly happened?”
He sighs loudly.
“The goose startled me so I swung at it and missed and fell on my hand.”
“Right, but what happened before that? And after that? I mean, what else? Like, what did you do? What were you thinking? You know! What happened?”
“I screamed…”
“YOU screamed!?”
“Yeah I screamed. Not a manly scream either.
I’m laughing at this point. My husband never screams or shows any sign of fear, always calm and collected.
“I’m sorry. Go on.”
“It came up behind me and poked me in the back. At first I thought somebody was maybe out there smoking a cigarette and thought it would be funny to sneak up behind me. Then I turned around and saw it.”
“And?”
“And I shined my light in its eyes. It was right there in my face. I didn’t know WHAT it was!”
“Then what?”
“Then I screamed and swung.”
I’m laughing hysterically at this point.
“Oh my God! You were attacked. I can’t believe you were attacked…by a goose. What happened then?”
“Well, somehow the goose was able to duck…”
 “The goose ducked?”
“Yeah…or something like that. Anyway, I swung at it and got off balance. I messed up my finger pretty good. It got jammed under me when I fell.”
He gestures toward his mangled finger. I stop laughing.
“Wow! I can’t believe you’re not making a big deal of this. Would you have even told me if I hadn’t asked what happened?”
“I don’t know…maybe…probably if I had thought of it.”
“That’s so interesting.”
“What?”
“You are. I just don’t get it!”
“Sooo?”
“So what?”
“Where’s your purse? I need my insurance card.”
“Oh…sure. I’ll get it for you.”

Saying goodbye.....

April 9, 2013

The day was gloomy, a grayish light pouring through the bedroom window. Gazing through the glass, I tried hard to make sense of the peculiar scenario unfolding in front of me…..Unable to; I turned away.

“Let’s close the curtains”, I said finally, feeling strangely exposed, “I think they see us.” His knowing expression told me he understood. Reaching out, he grabbed hold of my hands and twirled me around.

With a hearty laugh and twinkling eyes he rendered my heart weightless as he whisked me to the middle of the room....then, pulling me close, we danced, our souls clinging to each other, unwilling to let go.

For a while it eluded me....but then as imperceptible as vapor... it drifted in…..

Vague, unsettling, the memory;

I understood…..

Burying my head deep into his shoulder, I closed my eyes and squeezed him tightly one last time. The light, a little brighter now illuminated the softness in his eyes, the tenderness of his smile

"Thank you." I whispered….”I've been waiting.”

I knew he had to go….but this time I had a chance to say goodbye…

and my heart is thankful....

Some words are better left unsaid

I listened carefully from the next room.  Knowing the boys, their relationship, and the exceedingly emotional topic at hand, my "mother antennae" was on full alert.

“Are you bitter at ME?” The younger boy asked, suddenly.

I knew it had begun….

“Yes”, the other answered quietly, "he was my father".

Perhaps it was guilt, perhaps it was Jack Daniels, perhaps the younger boy really didn't get it….
It was incomprehensible to me, but he needed an explanation.
My heart thumped erratically as the elder boy expounded. Offering several illustrations as to how circumstances could have/should have played out differently.
He was hurting, but his patience never waned.
Even when younger boy’s words were filled with blatant contradictions
The elder boy, aware of his lies, chose to let it go.
I did not….
But some words are better left unsaid......

To be continued....
