Which are you?

Recently, researchers debunked the theory of left brain/right brain dominance, referring to it now as just a myth!!

I say.....

"Are you kidding me???"

For years I've found comfort in knowing my traits could be scientifically defined by the dominant hemisphere in my brain!!

It was simple! It provided balance.

Everyone knew that people of the right brain persuasion tended to be a little more whimsical, disorganized, or emotional, but we also knew that, what we lacked in logic or predictability, was compensated for by our creativity, and intuition.

Even better, we could scientifically  justify our phobia of higher level math ….I mean it was a known fact that mathematical skills were attributed to the left brain thinkers. but as right brainers we had the ability to whip out a picture or poem in the blink of an eye.

Each day, in the school setting, I witness clear examples of (what I still view as) left brain/right brain dominance. ( Unique, innate skills or talents that cannot be learned.). Unique skills that provide each child with a sense of competency.  Each day

How I envy those who function so effortlessly in areas that wreak havoc in my life. (e.g. organization. The books, containers, labels, and advice do nothing for a person who cannot make her brain cooperate.) That would be me!

That being said, I'm not ready to give up on the theory of left/right brain dominance....fact or myth, it's still working for me!

  1. Darlene, your voice in this piece is so genuine and funny. Are you kidding me?? I love it. I, too, believe in right/left brain theory, and I don't give a hoot what the research says. I am totally, 100% left brained.
You and I would make a good team. Together, we make a whole brain!

  2. Ummm.. This right brain gal feels this research is malarkey. :-) this piece made me chuckle and speak aloud "ummm excuse me!?!" I'm still a believer.

  3. I was just reminding my colleagues at school that they should appreciate all the right-brained kids in their classes, even if they do annoy them (do most teachers seem to be left-brained?). I'm right-brained, I can't find my desk, and I'm going to stick with that excuse. :)

  4. Thank you for letting me know about this post today. I absolutely believe in the right/left brain theory. What does need to be researched is how left brained people have right brained kids???
